According to Tesla, the Model S and Model X will go on sale in China on January 6, 2023, and deliveries will take place in the first half of 2023. Since Tesla stopped producing the Model S and Model X in January 2021 to update the models, they have not been available in China.
Over the past two years, Tesla has only delivered vehicles to North America due to difficulties in resuming production following the design update. Tesla’s two flagship vehicles have only recently returned to Europe.
When the Model S and Model X appeared in new Chinese government filings stating that the vehicles would be eligible for tax exemptions in October, we saw indications that the vehicles were returning to China. According to a Chinese social media platform similar to Twitter, Tesla announced that on January 6, 2023, it will announce pricing and possibly begin taking orders for the Model S and Model X Plaid.
Before Tesla stopped producing Model S and X at its Fremont factory in California, the Chinese market was a significant one. Currently, the automaker’s Shanghai factory produces only Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, but all Tesla vehicles sold in China originate there.
The cars are expected to be popular again in the market after a two-year absence, but they are much more expensive than the Model 3 and Model Y cars coming out of Shanghai. The vehicles will be more expensive not only because they are larger and more luxurious, but also because they will have to be imported from the United States.
