The large electrification push by Honda will include hydrogen fuel cell cars in the United States. Honda has revealed that it will start producing of the fuel cell vehicles in the country in 2024. Honda’s first hydrogen fuelled model will be a plug-in hybrid based on the latest-generation CR-V.

The drivers will theoretically be able to drive entirely on electricity for their daily commute, but they will still be able to drive emission-free over long distances. When the new hydrogen-powered Honda CR-V goes on sale in 2024, more information will be made public. The current CR-V is only available as a conventional hybrid vehicle with a gas engine, and it lacks features for plug-in vehicles. Honda is only willing to provide a peek at the production facility.

The new Honda model is a part of a larger plan by Honda to stop making cars with combustion engines by 2040 and instead focus on pure electric and fuel cell cars. On top of the new hydrogen-powered CR-V, the US customers can also expect the fully electric Prologue SUV in 2024, and Honda already sells the electric Honda E, but not in the United States. Honda also aims to be carbon neutral by 2050.

According to the reports, there is a market for the fuel cell SUV is uncertain, and the hydrogen cars have not gained much more traction in the United States compared to Honda’s fully-electric counterparts because of high prices and a lack of car filling stations.
