A new television series based on the 1992 John Katenbach novel and starring Scarlett Johansson, Just Cause, will be her first television appearance. Amazon has given a straight-to-series order through Deadline for the new series, in which Scarlett Johansson will star and serve as executive producer.

The actress has a special connection to the project because she starred as the daughter of Sean Connery’s character in the 1995 film adaptation when she was just 10 years old. In the first book of the series, a struggling Miami newspaper writer named Matt Cowart attempts to free a death row inmate when he receives a letter from the prisoner insisting on his innocence.

The character of Paul Armstrong, a Harvard law professor who is brought back into the courtroom to assist a young black man who has been accused of murdering a young white girl, has been changed to Paul Armstrong, played by Sean Connery, in the movie adaptation. Scarlett Johansson’s character Madison Cowart, a reporter for a Florida newspaper assigned to cover the final days of a death row inmate, will be the focus of the upcoming Just Cause series.

Together with writer Hall, Jonathan Lia, and Keenan Flynn of These Pictures, Scarlett Johansson’s These Pictures production company will produce the series. Despite the fact that the actress has only made brief appearances in a few other shows throughout her career, this will be her first major role in a TV series.

Scarlett Johansson also voiced for a number of characters for the Robot Chicken animated comedy series and made an appearance in an episode of Entourage in 2004. She made her last appearance on screen as Black Widow in Marvel’s Black Widow, and she played Ash in Sing 2. The actress is currently working on Project Artemis alongside Channing Tatum, Jim Rash, and Ray Romano.
