Tesla, an electric vehicle company owned by Elon Musk has started to allowe other automobile manufacturers to use its electric vehicle (EV) connector design. The Tesla charging connector that combines AC charging and around 1 megawatt of DC in a slim package, is the most known EV connector across North America, says Tesla.
According to Tesla, the connector is half the size and twice as powerful, and it has no moving parts compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors. Tesla is inviting several charging network operators and automobile manufacturers to put the Tesla charging connector, and charging port, which is now called as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), on their vehicles and charging equipment.
Tesla says, the supercharging network of the company has 60 percent more NACS posts than all the other CCS networks combined, and the NACS is the most common electric vehicle charging standard in the United States.
Owners of Tesla EVs can also expect charging at the other networks without requiring adaptors as the network operators have plans to implement NACS at their EV chargers. Tesla is looking forward to the future electric vehicles incorporating the NACS design and Tesla’s North American destination and supercharging networks.
Tesla is working with several relevant standard bodies to arrange charging connector of Tesla as a public standard.
