Amazon Facing Box Shortages in United Kingdom

Amazon and several other major retailers in the United Kingdom are facing a possible shortage of cardboard boxes during the Black Friday shopping period after workers at a packaging company voted to go on strike as part of a pay dispute.

Around 700 members of the GMB union working at DS Smith, which produces corrugated packaging for several major brands as well as Amazon, could take industrial action before the end of November 2022. Most of the retailers run promotions around the Black Friday period, which is due to take place on November 25th, 2022. Higher sales volume also leads to increased demand for packaging by retailers as they send their products to customers and stores.

93 percent of GMB members at DS Smith have voted in favour of a strike followed by the company’s pay offer, according to official figures. Eamon O’Hearn, national secretary at GMB, said that staff at DS Smith have worked throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and called on the company to improve its pay offer.

“Negotiations are going on with unions, and they aim to find a solution that works for everybody,” said a DS Smith spokesperson. “They are taking the customer’s needs very seriously, and they have contingency plans in place to deliver the best service possible.”
