Sixt to Purchase 100,000 EVs from China’s BYD

Sixt, the car Rental Company, plans to purchase more than 100,000 electric vehicles from Chinese automobile company BYD for its European fleet by 2028. Initially, Sixt has only committed to purchasing several thousand electric vehicles, the first of which will be delivered in 2022.

In a statement, Sixt said that it will deploy its new BYD electric vehicles to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands in the fourth quarter of 2022. This agreement comes after Hertz announced plans to purchase 175,000 electric vehicles manufactured by General Motors over the next five years.

Hertz has also signed several deals to purchase thousands of Tesla and Polestar electric vehicles in order to reach its goal of 25 percent electric vehicle fleet by the end of 2024.

This deal is in service of Sixt’s own sustainability goal, as the company is hoping to electrify 70 percent to 90 percent of its fleet in Europe by 2030. By the end of 2022, the company has promised to offer 20 new electric and hybrid models, including a variety of Opel, Renault, Audi, Peugot, BMW, and now BYD. The partnership with Sixt is BYD’s first deal with a car rental company in Europe.
