Apple Forced to Change Chargers in Europe

Technology

Apple will have to change the chargers of its iPhones in the European Union from 2024 in order to comply with the new rules introducing a single charging port for most electric devices or gadgets.

The reform, which was passed by a majority vote in the European Parliament, potentially strengthens the role of the European Union as a global standard-setter in telephone technology. The vote has also confirmed an earlier agreement between the European Union institutions.

The new rules will make the USB-C connector that is used by Android devices a standard in the European Union, forcing Apple to change its charging port for iPhones and several other devices. This will also be applied to laptops from 2026 onwards, which will give manufacturers more time to adopt.

Apple is expected to be the most affected by some major providers of electronic devices for the European nations, however analysts say that the impact can be positive if Apple encourages customers to purchase the new gadgets instead of USB-C.
