Mercedes Benz, Rivian Partner to Build Electric Van in Europe

Automobile

Mercedes-Benz and Rivian partnered to build electric vans at scale in Europe. This partnership will help each automobile company scale its bespoke large battery-electric van businesses, as Mercedes-Benz plans to remove gas-engine vans by 2025.

Together, the companies plan to build and operate a factory in Europe that produces vans for both brands, as Rivian has a contract to supply Amazon with 100,000 electric delivery vans, and will start to seek other commercial customers.

The new joint venture will enter production in a few years. The new electric vehicle factory will be located near one of the existing plants of Mercedes-Benz in Europe, and will serve as the first international presence of Rivian. Mercedes-Benz will not reveal the exact location, except to say that it is in eastern and central Europe.

Mercedes-Benz produces four electric vans, including the eVito Panel Van, the eVito Tourer, the eSprinter, and the EQV, in addition to the company’s eCitan and EQT. The partnership will help each company leverage costs and investments. The electric vans will be based on the electric van platform of Mercedes-Benz, and the second-generation Rivian Light Van (RLV) platform of Rivian.
