Rolls-Royce to launch mtu Marine Engines for Sustainable Fuels in 2023

Rolls-Royce is setting a new milestone on the way to climate-neutral shipping with the approval of its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine diesel engines in 2023 for use with sustainable fuels.

Following successful bench and field tests, the business unit of the company, Power Systems will gradually approve its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine engines for the EN15940 synthetic diesel fuel from the beginning of 2023. These fuels include sustainable fuels such as Biomass to Liquid (BtL), Power to Liquid (PtL), and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

Denise Kurtulus, VP Global Marines at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said there is already a lot of interest now from several customers in the marine industry who want to improve their carbon footprint, mainly with HVO. He also said the results from the main customers show a significant decrease in greenhouse gases, including particulate emissions, by using HVO and nitrogen oxide.

Since 2019, Jim Swindler, general manager of Golden Gate Ferry San Francisco, said they have been successfully testing the use of renewable diesel (HVO) with the mtu engines in around six ferries in their fleet. He added that the tests in more than 41,000 operating hours, confirmed that when HVO is used, the mtu engines perform as well as diesel, in terms of load acceptance, fuel consumption, and maximum power.
