US: Micron to Invest $15-Billion in New Idaho Fab

Business

Micron Technology, Inc., one of the biggest semiconductor companies and the only producer of memory based in the United States, announced plans to invest around 15 billion dollars through the end of the decade to construct a new fab for memory manufacturing in Boise, Idaho.

This is the first investment in the new memory production fab built in the United States in 20 years, with ensuring the domestic supply of the leading-edge memory required for the market segments such as data and automobile center that is fuelled by advancing adoption of the artificial intelligence and 5G network.

This is the first of multiple US investments planned by Micron, followed by the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, and it also represents the biggest private investment made in Idaho. Co-locating the new manufacturing fab with the research and development center of Micron at the headquarters will enhance the operational efficiency, with accelerating technology deployment, and improve time to market.

With the grants and credits made possible through the CHIPS and Science Act, and the incentives provided by the state of Idaho with the support of the governor, the new fab will create more than 17,000 jobs in the United States, including around 2,000 direct micron jobs by the end of 2030.
