UK Announced Around 40-Million Pounds to Provide Food and Water to West Africa

World

The United Kingdom will provide support to around 1 million of the most vulnerable people across the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel with food, water, and sanitation. Increasing instability and violent extremism across the region, and the war in Ukraine have exacerbated existing issues with malnutrition and food insecurity.

There will be around 20 million people across the region, who are in need of humanitarian aid by the end of 2022. The Sahel faces more vulnerabilities because of climate change, and extreme weather shocks, which are putting more stress on the communities, which means urgent intervention by the international community.

The United Kingdom is providing 37.65 million pounds in urgent humanitarian assistance, which is focused on these areas where conflict, extreme hunger, and climate change are causing the most suffering.

Vicky Ford, minister for Africa, said that millions of people across the Sahel and West Africa are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. He also said that is why the United Kingdom will step up with an urgent 38 million pounds of humanitarian funding, reach the most vulnerable, and save lives across the region.

He also said that the number of people facing starvation is at its worst for a decade. While this funding from the United Kingdom is a necessity, it has to be a part of a larger international effort.
