LG Energy Solution and General Motors Co. are considering New Carlisle, Indiana, as the location for the fourth Ultium Cells LLC joint venture battery cell manufacturing plant. The Ultium Cells are also developing a competitive business case for a large investment that can be located in the region of New Carlisel, Indiana.
Ultium Cells also submitted a tax abatement application with St. Joseph County that includes New Carlisle. Brooke Waid, spokesperson for Ultium Cells, said with the support of General Motors officials, they are in discussions with the appropriate local officials on the abatement application. He also said they are looking forward to the application being reviewed and hopefully being approved later this month.
Ultium Cells is specifically looking at a site located inside the Indiana Enterprise Center in New Carlisle, and the area has access to rail and is in proximity to some major interstates. The county council will be considering declaring the location as an Economic Revitalization Area to allow the site for a tax abatement.
Both LG Energy Solution and General Motors will likely invest over 2 billion dollars at the site, as they have with the other three locations in the country, and each of these three plants is expected to provide over 1,000 jobs when fully operational.
