PepsiCo Introduces Revolutionary Lay’s Chips Displays made from Waste

Environment

PepsiCo is expanding its use of the renowned thermoplastic of UBQ Materials, a climate technology developer, across the supply chain of the company in items ranging from shipping pallets to its Lay’s chip displays.

The Certified B Corp UBQ has patented the first bio-based thermoplastic in the world made entirely of unsorted household waste, which included all the organics, and has converted it into a sustainable substitute for plastics based on oil.

The use of UBQ mainly diverts municipal waste from incineration and landfills, preventing emissions from being released into the environment. For every ton f UBQ produced, around 12 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent have been prevented from polluting the environment.

Followed a successful pilot of PepsiCo in incorporating UBQ to decrease the carbon footprint of its shipping pallets, the company is now incorporating its use in Lay’s potato chip displays, which are made in part in partnership with UBQ, and launched across Europe.

Beyond the extension of new products, PepsiCo is also expanding on the primary logistics pilot, by ordering 30 thousand more shipping pallets produced with UBQ.

David Schwartz, Vice president of PepsiCo Labs, said their main goal is to transform their whole supply chain to fight against sustainability challenges. They are putting sustainability and innovation at the centre of their operations, and achieving these goals has been integral to the future of their business, their customers, and the planet.
