Danone Sends Baby Formula to Tackle Shortage in the US

Healthcare

Danone, a French consumer goods company, has sent 1.3 million cans of Aptamil to the United States. The North American Unit of Danone said it had shipped over 750,000 cans of its flagship Aptamil baby formula to the United States from Europe, with another 550,000 cans of the baby formula on the way.

Aptimal is little known in the United States of America, but it is a big brand in Europe, where Danone is a dominant player in the market. This move to introduce Aptamil to parents in the United States can give Danone, the opportunity to grab market share from the leaders such as Abbott Laboratories and Reckitt Benckiser.

The additional 550,000 cans of Aptamil that are on the way from New Zealand will mostly be available in August 2022, while the primary shipments are already available on the shelves and online at Safeway, Walgreens, and several other stores. Danone also said it had imported over 500,000 cans of Neocate, which is a specialized medical baby formula.

In February 2022, Abbott recalled dozens of brands of baby formula, which sparked one of the biggest food shortages in the history of the United States. Since then, the government of the United States and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have made it easier for the producers to get shipments into the country, and have also appealed to companies like Reckitt and Nestle to step up production.
