US Reported its First Polio Case in Nearly a Decade

The health officials in the state of New York, said the United States of America has reported its first case of polio disease in nearly a decade after a patient had tested positive for the disease. On Thursday, July 21, 2022, the health department of New York state, said the case had been detected in a resident living in Rockland County, which is around 48 kilometres north of Manhattan.

The health department said testing has suggested the case of the highly contagious virus might have been originated outside of the United States. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, Rockland County Health Commissioner, said they are monitoring the situation closely and are working with the New York State Department of Health and the US CDC to respond to this emergent public health problems to protect the health and well-being of the residents of the county.

The patient is no longer deemed contagious, but the investigators are trying to identify how the infection occurred and whether others had been exposed. The officials also told the healthcare providers to be on the lookout for more number of cases and has also urged the people in the area, who are not vaccinated for getting a polio shots.

According to US CDC, the last case of polio disease in the United States had been recorded in 2013.
