BASF, world’s largest chemical producer, have started a new phase in their strategic partnership to advance modern chemical production. The wide-range strategic partnership, which had been extended with a new framework agreement, and is generating know-how and intellectual property for enabling the chemical industries to improve their performance, resilience, and sustainability.
As being one of the strategic global partner universities of BASF, Imperial is collaborating with the company on a range of research that mainly includes techniques for using energy and materials more efficiently and replacing feedstocks based on fossil fuels with some renewable alternatives.
Main focus of the partnership is the development of continuous production methods, which is known as flow chemistry, for the synthesis of high-value, low-volume products such as pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and agrochemicals.
This approach increases the efficiency, safety, and quality of chemical manufacturing, and accelerating research and development by generating detailed experimental datasets at a very high throughput.
In addition to the efficiency and environmental benefits, and the innovations in flow chemistry and several other areas can possibly help the industry to become more resilient to supply the shocks caused by events such as the Coronavirus pandemic, and the Ukraine and Russia war by enabling manufacturers to easily substitute raw materials and deploying a large number of small and highly distributed continuous facilities of production.
