US to Proceed with Biofuels Production despite Food Shortages

Agriculture

Jewel Bronaugh, the deputy secretary for agriculture of the United States, said the United States will proceed with biofuels production, despite increasing concerns over a food crisis across the globe, and calls from campaigners to give priority to grain for human consumption over the use as a fuel.

Jewel Bronaugh said US farmers could possibly continue to produce biofuels without harming food production. She said now they are keeping food security on top of mind, but at the same time they also want to remain steadfast in support and promotion of biofuel.

She said, biofuels could possibly help to decrease the need for fossil fuels, and thus providing help in tackling the climate crisis, and had been important in keeping down the price of fossil fuels.

She added that they know biofuels have a significant positive impact, and not only on climate change, but on the affordability of gas, which has been very important for the world economy.

Jewel Bronaugh said there are many opportunities for increasing jobs, and they will continue to promote biofuels as a sustainable fuel, particularly at a time when the gas prices are very high.

For years, the United States has been the biggest producer of ethanol in the world for use as a transport fuel, and usually blended with petrol and is distilled from maize, and one of the biggest producers of biodiesel from oils also including soya. Many farmers in the United States benefit from production of biofuel, which offers them an increased market.
