US Produces More Power from Wind, Solar than Nuclear Energy

For the first time ever, solar and wind energy produced 17.96 percent more electricity in April 2022 than nuclear power plants. Further, electricity generation by clean energy, which included biomass, hydropower, and geothermal and was driven by strong wind and solar energy growth that accounted for almost 30 percent of total electricity generation in April 2022 in the United States.

According to the report from US Energy Information Administration (EIA), with data through April 30, 2022, is also reflecting that solar energy saw a year-on-year percentage change growth of 28.9 percent, as wind energy has grown year-on-year by 24.2 percent.

Combined together, wind and solar energy increased by 25.4 percent and accounted for over 16.6 percent of electricity generation in the United States, and the actual figures are now measured in net generation. The hydropower is increased by 9.99 percent during the first 4 months of 2022, but wind energy alone has provided 70.89 percent more electricity than hydropower did.

When it comes to fossil fuels, the renewable energy has outpaced nuclear energy and coal by 26.13 percent and 37.8 percent respectively in the first quarter of 2022. The electricity generated by coal has declined by 3.9 percent compared to the same period in 2021m which the production of electricity by nuclear energy has dropped by 1.8 percent.
