Google Announced 3rd Innovation Challenge for News Publishers in Asia Pacific

Google announced the third Asia Pacific Google News Initiative (GNI) Innovation Challenge, as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to support the news industry across the world.

Google said previous rounds of the Innovation Challenge has supported more than 30 publishers across the Asia Pacific region to develop sustainable business models by diversifying the revenue streams and increasing the engagement of the audience.

Nic Hopkins, news ecosystem and programmes lead for Google Asia Pacific said the applications are now open to news companies of all sizes for projects that mainly focus on innovation in the news industry.

The Asia Pacific Innovation Challenge of Google is open to news companies of all sizes that are aiming to produce original journalism and whose projects mainly focus on innovation to create a more diverse and sustainable news sector.

Google said that the projects will be evaluated against several criteria, including the impact on the news community, feasibility, innovation and a willingness to share their knowledge. Nic Hopkins said, the applications are now open until August 23, 2022 and can be submitted through their website in several languages including Korean, Thai, Japanese, Hindi, Chinese, English, or Indonesian.

Since 2018, the GNI Innovation Challenges has funder more than 200 projects in 47 countries across the globe.
