According to the government of the United States, the atmospheric levels of methane, which has been a greenhouse gas, has been increased by a record amount for the second year in year in the year 2021.
The concentration of the methane in the atmosphere of the Earth has been increased by 17 parts per billion in the year 2021, as found by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) monitoring, which has been the largest annual increase that is recorded since the modern measurements has started in the year 1983.
As the carbon dioxide has been emitted from the burning of the fossil fuels can now possibly linger in the atmosphere and is also contributing towards the global heating for generations and methane has been lived far shorter.
However, methane has also been far more potent as a greenhouse gas and it has been 25 times more powerful at trapping the heat and is also acting as a significant driver of the climate crisis for short term period. The climate activists also said that, methane has been a blow torch to the climate as it has been compared with the gradual heat provided by the carbon dioxide.
The fast decrease in the methane from the atmosphere can possibly help in stopping the disastrous heating across the globe and according to the scientists, the record increase in the methane content is suggesting that, it is being leaked from the drilling operations of the oil and gas.
