ICCO Announced Funding To Tackle Cadmium Content in Cocoa Beans

The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) has now announced a large and new initiative for the purpose of addressing the cadmium content in the cocoa beans. This new project or initiative is going to be responsible for improving the capacity building and knowledge sharing for the purpose of supporting the management of the cadmium levels in cocoa in the region of the Caribbean and Latin America.

This initiative is also going to be implemented in the countries including Columbia, Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago and Peru along with a budget of 551,000 dollars, which has made possible through a financial contribution from the European Union and WTO (World Trade Organization). The participating countries are going to provide the remainder of the requirements of financing as the contribution from their counterpart.

The Cadmium, which has been a naturally occurring chemical element can also have some adverse health effects when it is consumed in the contaminated foodstuffs, and the European Commission has also set the MRLs (Maximum Residue Levels) from the content of cadmium in the foodstuffs that is including the specific chocolate and cadmium products.

Michel Arrion, executive director of the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) said, this project is bringing together the national and international institutions, along with the cocoa producers and academic bodies and several other important stakeholders for providing the substantive contributions in the innovative methodologies, along with knowledge and expertise and effective communication in the cocoa beans for the benefits of all the stake holders.
