US Justice Department Launched Investigation into Alabama County Waste Disposal

On Tuesday, 9^th November 2021, the Justice Department of the United States announced that, it has launched a landmark environmental justice investigation into the wastewater disposal by the Department of Public Health of Alabama and the Lowndes County’s health department.

In a statement, the federal department of the United States said that, the investigators along with the Civil Rights Division of the country are going to probe the allegation, which the disposal of the wastewater by the departments has been discriminating against the black residents living in the Lowndes County, that has been located in the southwest region of Montgomery, in the violation of the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which has been recipients of the financial assistance from the discrimination.

Both the health departments of Alabama have now been accused of disposing of the wastewater that has been diminishing the access of the black residents of the county for the systems used for the purpose of sanitation, which has been unjustifiably and disproportionately causing the people living in the county to bear with the risk of the adverse diseases and health effects specifically the infections of hookworm.

Kristen Clarke, Assistance Attorney General for Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department said, the sanitation has been a basic human need, and none of the people in the country shall possibly be exposed for risking of the illness along with several other harmful effects of the inadequate access for the effective and safe sewage management.
