The BMW i Ventures has now been investing in the Lilac Solution, a start-up in the United States, as the company has been developed an innovative process for the resource-saving and environmentally friendly mining of lithium. With the help of the investment, the BMW Group is also wanting to promote the technological process in the field of the mining of lithium.
The company ‘Lilac Solutions’ has been successfully developed and patented a technology, that has been using an ion exchanger for the purpose of significantly improving the mining of the lithium from the deposits from the brine of saltwater in the terms of costs, sustainability and efficacy.
According to BMW, this technology has already been successful in proving itself in the initial projects, and the technology must have to prove that it has been scalable and can possibly be industrialized in the medium terms. According to the company, the hope is that the process is going to be designed in such a way that, it can possibly be used across world in the brines, even if there is low content of lithium.
In the past processes for the extraction of lithium from brine, the moisture has gradually been removed from the brine until the solids remain and then they can be processed further, and the evaporation has also been taking place in the big basins of evaporation in the special plants, that are however, required for the further processing of energy.
