Environmental Group: US Military Sites Polluting Chesapeake Bay with Forever Chemicals

According to a report published by the Environmental Working Group of US, around 9 sites of the United States military along the Chesapeake Bay have been leaking the contaminated fluids, that are also known as the forever chemicals into the estuary, and the Environmental Working Group based in Washington have released the report after it gained access to the records of the US Department of Defense through a request of Freedom of Information Act.

The records have found some high levels of the pollution or contamination in the Chesapeake Bay from the most toxic chemicals made by man known as the Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), that does not breakdown in the Environment of the planet, along with giving rise to some severe health risks, which might cause cancer.

The researchers have written in the report, the chemicals have been released into the bay, will be adversely affecting the wildlife of the bay, along with potentially causing harm to the food supply and livelihoods of the residents living in the area, and this contamination of the bay has also been highlighting the need for the swift of the Department of Defense clean-up, that use the harmful chemicals in the firefighting foams and they also know the harmful effects of the chemicals.

Six sites of the US military in the region of Maryland had been found to be leaking the toxic chemicals, and these sites are only situated in the western side of the Chesapeake Bay, and the defense sites includes the Martin State Air National Guard, US Naval Research Laboratory Chesapeake Bay Detachment, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, along with the US Naval Academy and Aberdeen Proving Ground and Blossom Point.
