Study: EU’s Demand for Electricity Rebounds With Lesser Emissions

Power & Energy

According to a report published on Wednesday, 28th July 2021, the demand for the electricity in the European Union has now returned to the pre-pandemic levels without any kind of increase in the green house emissions, and an analysis of the data done from the grid operators has been showing that, the demand for electricity in the European Union during the first half of 2021 has been matching wit the demand of the same period in 2019.

Although the sources of the renewable energy have accounted for more production of the electricity significantly in the first half of 2021 as compared with the first six months of 2019, as the power generated from the fossil fuels have significantly been decreased as it was before the novel corona virus pandemic, and this has resulted in the production of 12 percent less greenhouse gas emissions by the power industry of European Union over the period of two years.

According to the report, this decrease in the use of fossil fuels has been partly resulted from the continuously increasing costs, mainly for the gas, in the first six months of 2021, along with high carbon prices, and the cost of the renewables has been remained stable since the year 2019.

The researchers of the study said that, the analysis has shown that, in the countries including Germany, Spain, Italy and France, the production of the electricity from the fossil fuels and coal plants has now been around twice more expensive as the generation of the electricity from the new solar energy and wind energy plants.
