AstraZeneca’s Acquisition Deal for Alexion to Complete Soon

The pharmaceutical company ‘AstraZeneca’ is now expecting be complete the 39 billion dollars acquisition of the company Alexion on 21st July 2021 after getting the clearance from the Competition and Markets Authority of United Kingdom.

With the acquisition of the company Alexion, the drugmaker ‘AstraZeneca’ is going to gain a major foothold in a continuously increasing lucrative market for the drugs or medicines for rare diseases, and the company ‘Alexion’, is current selling five different types of medicines for sever various conditions and it had also brought in over 6 billion dollars in the revenue in 2020.

AstraZeneca said, a monoclonal antibody drug known as Soliris, that has been approved for the treatment of four types of rare diseases has topped 4 billion dollars, and the such types of rare diseases mainly represent a high-growth opportunity, and only around 5 percent of the total 7,000 known rare diseases are having the approval for treatments in the United States.

After the closure of the transaction, the company ‘AstraZeneca’ is going to create a group within the company, that will be completely focused on the rare diseases, and the unit ‘Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease’, is going to be based in Boston, US.

The deal has been a part of a larger shift for the company AstraZeneca, which is once known best from the medicines including Crestor for the treatment of high cholesterol and Nexium for the treatment of gastrointestinal problems, and for years, the company has been devoting more number of resources to the rapidly increasing business of cancer drug along with increasing the presence of the company in the specialty care products.
